Carter, Singson save Cebu in First Sinulog 42K footrace

Local bets Madelyn Carter and Adonis Singson saved the day of the Cebuanos yesterday as visiting veteran runners Stella Mamac-Diaz of Davao City and Manila-based Bernardo Desamito ruled the First Sinulog 42-kilometer Marathon.

Carter broke the dominance of the visitors as she placed third in the women's division with a time of three hours, 27 minutes and 36.41 seconds, finishing behind the multi-titled Diaz of Holiday Spa-Cebu, who clocked two hours, 54 minutes and 85 seconds.

Grabbing the second place honors was another Davao runner Merlie Edullantes, who timed 3:12:41.22.

Cebuana school teacher Merlita Arias was fourth in 3:33:51.22 and the fifth placer was Cynthia Bataluna of Danao City in 3:57:02.83.

Over in the men's side, Singson also completed the top three finishers as Desamito ruled in 2:23:45.19 and another member of the Armed Forces, Rene Desuyo, trailed for second in 2:25:16.51.

Occupying the fourth and fifth places were Noel Espina in 2:36:03.03 and Placido Diaz in 2:39:36.32, both from Davao City.

They all received cash prizes, trophies and medals.

Meanwhile, Cebu's Queen of the Road Leizel Lumindas-Getaruelas and the youthful Joel Delposo of Badian National High School stamped their respective classes to win the 5K fun run.

Getaruelas, who opted to join the 5K distance as she prepares for the Friendship Run and Adidas Queen of the Road elimination here, was up again in the women's division, clocking 19:32.00.

She was followed by Joeyry Ann Lee of Toledo City (19:47.95) and Mary Jane Beboso of Lapu-Lapu City (21:59.90).

Delposo, for his part, was stretched to the limit as he needed to sprint to the finishing line to dispose tough rival Xanderlyn Loloy of University of San Jose-Recoletos.

Delposo took the title in 16:14.16, nipping Loloy, who arrived home 16:14.45.

A far third was Ramil Lumindas in 16:48.99.
