Toledo enters semis in GUV Cup

Toledo City had to pass by the proverbial eye of the needle before it enters the cross over semifinal battle in the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup set Friday at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex in Mandaue City.

After losing to Mandaue City, which eventually emerged as the top team in pool B, Toledo City had to battle it out with Catmon since both are tied with a 3-1 win-loss card in order to secure the semis berth.

Toledo City claimed the first set, 25-23, but the momentum shifted to Catmon's side in the second canto, 25-19.

Good thing, Catmon ran out of gas and gave up the fight to Toledo City in the deciding set, 25-17.

With the win, Toledo City joined Mandaue City in the semifinals.

Mandaue City, on the other hand, still has a game left versus Medellin, but the outcome of the game will no longer affect their bid in the penultimate round.

In pool A, it's the defending champion Lapu-Lapu City and Talisay City advancing to the next round.

Lapu-Lapu got the top spot after winning against Talisay in straight sets.

Lapu-Lapu came out clean after sweeping all qualifying round assignments, the last one of which saw them winning with 25-23, 25-22.

The cross-over semifinal round takes place Friday with the winners going for the overall crown.
