The rivalry

All suited up with my equipment ready, I headed to the Cebu Country Club very early yesterday morning for the 5th La Salle-Ateneo Golf Tournament.

I knew it was going to be difficult to find a schedule that would allow me to head out of the course by 10:30 a.m. to attend the membership screening committee meeting at Alta Vista Golf and Country Club, but the Boy Scout in me told me to just be ready.

Boy was I ready, well in terms of garb, but definitely not game, uinfortunately time became a matter of essence and playing was not anymore an option.

The action resumes today with a Ryder Cup-like matchplay event to highlight the tournament. Each team will field 12 selected players - four class A, three class B or higher, one lady, and the alumni association president.

The La Salle team skippered by San Remigio Councilor Nino Bascon, who I am gladly assisting, believes in gender equality that we are not only fielding one lady player, but three and two of them will match up with the men.

National team member Lora Roberto, who had a superb game yesterday is going up in one of the four singles matches against Ateneo's Jovi Neri. The two are close friends and this shall be an interesting match to watch.

The other female La Sallite, Trisha Maclang, who is now training with the national squad will team up with Nino for the best ball event.

And Cebuana Mary Kim Hong will go up against Ateneo Cagayan's Lovelyn Guioguio in a featured match.

There will be an alternate shot match, a scramble, and also a high-low match, which should cap the day.

The team that wins most points in this contest shall have a good chance of claiming the overall title.

From the early results, La Salle is hoping that the tide has turned after four years of trying. Well, I didn't see our other town councilor, Balamban's favorite son Dave John Binghay Karamihan, see action yesterday. Maybe he will today.

If you have nothing much to do this morning and would want to witness the intense rivalry of La Salle and Ateneo in the golf course, head to the Cebu Country Club and cheer for your team. Just don't do it when they're hitting the ball.
