Motels, Tormis lead winners in Jawad Cup table tennis tilt

Internationalist Michael Motel and his younger sister Mary Angeli of the University of Cebu/Crown Paddle dumped their respective opponents to win the championship crown in the 2006 Erne Jawad Cup Memorial Table Tennis Championships at the Activity Center of the Elizabeth Mall yesterday.

Michael, who represented Team Cebu City and the Philippines in the various international age group table tennis tournaments, defeated in straight sets his teammate Glendo Nayre, 3-0, to win the championship plum in the premier men's open division.

The third placer was Wendel Zamora.

Mary Angeli, on the other hand, topped in the girls 17 and under division, beating Elona Dane Tormis, 3-2.

Mary Grace Motel was the third placer.

All the top three placers in the 17 and under were from UC/Crown Paddle.

The premier Women's Open title went to Gloria Belandres of Hua Ching Foundation.

Belandres dumped Jennifer Jacalan, 3-1, to rule the event as Florenda Wadjad of University of San Carlos settled for third.

The boy's 17 and under division saw the domination of Benedict Gantuangko of UC/Crown Paddle over teammate Gino Angelo Selma, 3-0, and the third place trophy was clinched by Genesis Apas of Hua Ching Foundation.

The girl's 12 and under division championship plum was garnered by siblings Elona Dane and Dannel Day Tormis.

Elona Dane ruled the girl's side, beating Gerlie Apas, 3-2, while Glacy Suico was third.

Dannel Day, for his part, topped in the boy's division over John Paul Christopher Ba-ay, 3-0, as Ruel Saladaga finished third. - Rafael S. Alas III and Correspondent Marigold Lebumfacil
