The Corn Tee
September 9, 2006 | 12:00am
I would have loved to spend this weekend at the Club Filipino Incorporada de Cebu course in Danao City for the 9th Corn Tee Invitational Golf Tournament, but several commitments keep me from a game that I have learned to love.
I do keep in constant touch with the tournament's overall chairman, Ricarte 'Rikitoi' Santos, who gives me updates.
I can imagine hitting a drive on the first hole and pitching my ball into the elevated green then reality will hit me and I often three-putt if not four-putt that hole.
Well, I guess staying away from the golf course is saving me a lot of misery, but then I do wish I had the time to be in Danao City, but then maybe just not this time.
One thing that I like most about the course is the fact that it reminds me of one of the people in Cebu sports, who I admire so much, the late Peter 'Maestro' Chiongbian, the man who built the course.
One of these days, I'm going to treat myself to a round of golf in Danao. It shall be a wonderful retreat from the rat race in the city and a perfect get away that offers a great view of the mountains of Danao and also a glimpse of the sea.
I'm starting to daydream again. Well, it must be because I miss playing golf. Or is it because of too much sun from playing football?
I got a text message yesterday from Gorio Balsicas, who I never knew can still whip out a mean Metallica number until I saw him climb up the stage at Tequila Joe's during the joint victory celebration of the Queen City United Football Club and the Paref-Dads.
Goryo informed me of an important meeting tomorrow morning of the Queen City UFC at the USC-Talamban field.
This means having to pry myself out of the bed on Sunday morning, but football seems quite addicting despite the age and the many factors that somehow tell us it's about time we stick to just being assistants of our children.
Well, I'm sure they're having fun seeing their dads play and it is also the driving force why you see guys like us at Queen City United, Paref-Dads, Hiroshi, Don Bosco Alumni, San Roque Football Club, and many more teams continue to sweat it out in our soccer gear. It's a great way to bond with the family.
The mommies agree to that too. This is because many husbands are now home early on Friday and Saturday nights to prepare for football the next day.
MILESTONES: Birthday greetings to my friends Simonette Serra-Guanzon and Asuncion Astor-Aluben, who both turn a year older today.
More power to both of you!
