UV Lancers drop first game in CESAFI men's volleyball

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -
The over-all championship bid of the University of the Visayas Lancers suffered a major blow yesterday even as they lorded it over in the basketball and badminton events of the 2006 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) yesterday.

This developed after its men's team failed to score an upset over 2005 runner-up University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), bowing 3-1, at the start of the volleyball event at the University of San Carlos (USC) gym.

The spiking Lancers had a promising start, but the USPF Panthers stepped up, coming from a 22-24 deficit, they rallied to claim the first set, 26-24.

With the momentum on its side, the Panthers went on to claim the second set, 25-23.

But the Lancers was not about to give up just as they tried harder even with only three veteran players in the line.

They still managed to fight back and claimed a 25-19 mark at the third set, even when their coach, Raffy Briones, left the playing area for unknown reason, delegating the task to his new assistant coach.

The Panthers, however, utilized experienced to stop the Lancers from stealing the show from them.

Earlier, USC Lady Warriors pulled a 3-1 win against the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-13.

Today, a total of six games will be featured still at the USC gym.

The men's division will take place in the morning with USC meeting UC, USPF versus CIT and defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos going up against UV.

In the afternoon, SWU meets UC, USPF against USC and USJ-R opposite UV.
