Roaring Tiger
August 31, 2006 | 12:00am
Tiger Woods gave those who woke up early Monday morning a reason to be wide awake, well I hope they stayed the same at work.
Woods pulled one of the most dramatic wins in his career by slipping past Stewart Cink in the playoffs after four holes.
Tiger did not look so sharp going to the last few holes of the event at Firestone nor did he appear to be the same man who won back-to-back majors during the playoffs.
What he did best was to stay calm in the middle of the storm. Well almost literally as the downpour somehow changed the entire picture.
In the end, the rain sunk Cink and Tiger roared to victory. It was one more win added to his still growing list.
This is the year of the Tiger again and I'm sure there will be more coming.
I was brushing my teeth at a little past six o'clock yesterday morning when my phone rang. It was my compadre Ramon Sebastian, who sounded very excited. Who would not be? He just witnessed our Oly Dychangco score an ace.
Ramon is probably perfect material for a field reporter as he was quick to rattle off to me all the details of the ace. I just had one thing to tell him, "wait for me, I'm on my way there."
It was Oly's first ace in 13 years of playing golf. In fact, there was a little discussion as to when he started as Ramon and another compadre, Michael Go, were trying to figure out how long it had been.
Well, Michael surely knows how it feels to score an ace since this guy scored the only hole-in-one that I personally witnessed. He remembers that feat with a BMW that occupies a special place in his garage.
There was no car or a prize for Pareng Oly's ace, but then to a golfer, a hole-in-one is always worth celebrating.
Members of Team Cebu City Dancesport were at the session hall of the Cebu City Council yesterday afternoon to report about their accomplishments in the international stage.
The 67 gold medals won in the United States, plus the country's first gold in the International Children's Games (ICG) in Bangkok, Thailand are major accomplishments that brought a lot of honor to Cebu City.
After the presentation of the team at the session hall, there was a thanksgiving merienda cena at the conference room of the vice-mayor's office.
I can't help but feel very happy to see how far dancesport has gone from a late night activity in the clubs featuring ballroom dancing to an everyday sport that we are very good at.
There are more to accomplish, but I believe that we're heading there and there is no need to rush. One thing that I am however very sure is that the team would not be resting on their laurels.
There is much work ahead and they are bent on really keeping it going.
The big leagues in Europe are up next. Soon, we shall hear about Team Cebu City heading there and I believe the wait won't be that long.
If there was anyone in the gathering who was so overwhelmed, I'm sure it would be dancesport's godfather Edward Hayco, who looked like a very proud and happy first-time father as he watched the presentation at the session hall.
Well, all these would not have happened without his leadership and desire to really reach out to more people like those in the barangays.
To the Team Cebu City Dancesport, you give us many more reasons to even be prouder that we're Cebuanos.
MILESTONE: Happy birthday to Philexport's Abundia Gabutan-Encontro, who turns a year older today. More power to you, Amy!
