Wet weather conditions

The 3rd Matias H. Aznar Memorial Cup tees off today at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club with about 240 players participating.

This is one of the big tournaments that club members and guests look forward to. Just a couple of days ago, the list of participants was at over 180, but it easily swelled with several last-minute entries.

Like everyone else who will be playing in the tournament, that is if my schedule permits me to do so, I am hoping for fine weather today.

It's really hard to play when it rains especially if it contributes to some joint and muscle pains that you are already suffering.

Better bring your rain gear to the fairways and also don't forget to bring extra clothes.

There will be two football festivals happening in the succeeding weekends and this has gotten many people very excited.

After a lull in the competitions when people concentrated on the FIFA World Cup and with the start of the Aboitiz Cup, Cebu football shows how much it is alive and well with the series of events that are taking place.

I learned about the Mizuno Football Festival several weeks ago from my teammate Greg Balsicas III, who sent me e-mail asking me to free up my schedule so I can join the Queen City United Team B.

It was only recently, that I learned from no less than Dr. Wendell Villacin of Mint Sports Shop, the distributor of Mizuno products, that the event will be on August 26 and 27 at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits field inside the Cebu Business Park.

Greg surely keeps me updated about the events as recently he also asked me to join our team for a tournament at the San Roque Parish Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City on August 19.

That means there will be very busy weekends ahead for the football community, but does not mean we are not wanting for more.

Of course, I stick to my stand that the festivals and tournaments are not enough to fully develop the sport in Cebu and our country, we need to move several steps forward to be able to realize our dream of a Philippine team in the World Cup.

While we're helping lay the groundwork for that, let's take part in the activities and show our solidarity as a football community.

Politics should not have a place in Cebu football. Take it from me, I am not a member of the association, but I am actively supporting the activities for the love of the game and of my son, who is very passionate about the sport.

MILESTONE: Congratulations to Councilor Raul 'Yayoy' Alcoseba on the opening of Yayoy's Grill at Capitol Site earlier this week. I had a chance to try the food at the place last Thursday during the meeting of the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) and I believe this is one place where many sports aficionados will gather.
