Defending champion Bmeg '85 routed Libresse '82/88, 99-86, to sweep their best-of-three semi-final series of the first division in the San Carlos Boys High Alumni Basketball Association (SCBHABA)- Atan Guardo Cup at the USC North campus gym the other day.
Despite losing the team's main gunner Edwin Banaag in the opening minute of the first quarter due to an injury, Bmeg was never threatened with ex-PBA player Lou Regidor leading the charge, scoring 31 of his 40 points in the first half.
But when Libresse tried to put the cuffs on Regidor in the second half, Virgil Pua took over the scoring cudgels, hitting three of his six treys on top of season-high 30 points.
"Good defense was the key to our victory. Despite being undermanned, the team never lost focus," said playing-coach Regidor.
Edmundo Odulio and Bonito Zanoria with 21 and 20 points, respectively, led Libresse.
Interestingly, batch '85 was never defeated in its eight straight final appearances. They will be facing Osaka '86 in the final match.
The Scores:
BMEG '85 (99)- Regidor 40, Pua 30, Sepe 8, Aznar 6, Torrejos 6, Bacaltos 4, Banaag 2, Ramos 2 and Montebon 1.
LIBRESSE '82/88 (86)- Odulio 21, Zanoria 20, Auza 20, Sausa 15, Diaz 8, Honorio 2 and Balankig 2. - Marigold P. Lebumfacil
