CESAFI basketball teams face tall order vs UV

- Gabby G. Malagar -
"Beat UV!"

This will be the battlecry of teams that are joining the basketball tournament of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc (CESAFI).

Most of the coaches, except for Edito Salacaut of University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and Rudy Enterina of Don Bosco, claimed their teams are very weak and therefore beating the University of the Visayas Green Lancers in the CESAFI remains an elusive dream to them.

The Lancers hold a 58-1 win-loss record in the CESAFI game history.

Among the coaches who attended the weekly SCOOP Sports Forum yesterday, only Roe Gomez of the University of Cebu Webmasters stood proud with his head high as only his wards were the only team which tarnished the record of the Lancers.

They defeated the Lancers, 75-68, at their hometurf in last year's CESAFI season.

The Webmasters will be parading Allain Abellanosa, their sweet-shooting point guard who is armed with a deadly three-point skill.

When asked what made UV so difficult to beat since during the CAAA years, UV coach Elmer "Boy" Cabahug said the advantage of UV players is that they are better exposed because "we will let them play in other places if there are invitations to play. Diha namo makita kung kinsa gyuy angayan ibutang sa team.

The other factor is their basketball program, recruitment and privileges given to their players, which the other schools find it hard to match.

"We are giving them free board and lodging plus allowances", he said.
