M. Lhuillier collars MVBA-Visayas title

Given the chance to live for another day, the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City Jewelers came back with vengeance and hacked out an 81-58 victory over the Cebu Landmaster-Toledo in the deciding Game 3 to win the Visayas Division title of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference last Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Thus, the Jewelers earned the right to face off Mindanao Division titlist Pacman-Gensam of boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao in the best-of-five series for the first ever MVBA championship.
Game 1 is set at 6:00 pm today at the Cebu Coliseum in the league made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Nature's Spring, Panasonic, Molten, and Sulpicio Lines.
"The boys were just determined to win the champions. They want to prove that they could still make things happen even if Stephen Padilla is no longer with the team," said an ecstatic M. Lhuillier coach and Cebu City Councilor Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba in a post-game interview.
Their pride hurt following their 83-89 loss in the series opener last May 31, the Jewelers were oozing with confidence and dominated Toledo in all aspects of the game in the rubbermatch.
With Alano Caputolan on the charge, the Jewelers turned an 18-19 deficit into a 42-36 lead at halftime.
That turned out to be the start of Toledo's nightmare.
With their shots clicking on all angles, the Jewelers turned the second half into an all-M. Lhuillier show.
After taking a 16-point lead at the end of the third period, 65-49, things just got even better for the Jewelers as they went on to virtually seal the crown with an unassailable 25-point edge, 76-51, entering the final six-minute mark of the contest.
Not so long, Toledo coach Jun Tan conceded defeat by fileding in his second stringers in the likes of Fritz Villamor, Manny Gabas and John Malinao, all his former wards while coaching with the USJ-R Jaguars.
Michael Manigo topped the Jewelers with 19 points, followed by Caputolan and Ariel Mepaña with 12 markers apiece. Jayford Rodriguez added 11 points.
Carlos Sayon had 15 points for Toledo.
Toledo's top gunners in Alex Cainglet, Ronald Paraiso, and Maui Huelar had ice-cold showing at the point they needed to deliver. Cainglet only had four points, Paraiso eight and Huelar two.
