USPF starts strong in Shakey's volleyball

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Lady Panthers opened its bid in an impressive note in the Shakey's Girls Volleyball "The Tournament of the Champions" at the Ateneo Blue Eagle gym.

The Lady Panthers never gave Iloilo's bet, Passi National High School a chance to win a set, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21.

They banked on strong spikers, Frika Verano and Ma. Teresa Caballero, who combined for 18 kills.

Passi tried to prolong the game behind the effort of Passi's team captain Cindy Optana, who scored 12 kills. But she missed her targets.

Passi even went down the cellar after bowing down to Doña Monserrat Lopez High School of Bacolod 25-13, 28-26, 21-25, 25-22.

Monserrat earlier bowed down to reigning UAAP Champion University of the East, 25-18, 25-16, 25-22, behind Giza Yumang, one of the candidates for the League's MVP.

The Shakey's Secondary Girls' final showdown, supported by Dunkin Donuts, Toby's Sports, Mikasa, the Official Volleyball and Air Philippines, saw the presence of Roger Banzuela, president of the Philippine Volleyball Federation, Freddie Infante, Managing Director of Metro Sports and Ms. Coochy Mamaclay, Shakey's Brand Manager in attendance during the opening day.
