May 26, 2006 | 12:00am
The 3rd Big Al's Cycling Challenge unreels today at the Cebu Grand Hotel in Camputhaw with around 300 participants are expected to see action.
The three-day event features skateboarding, bmx and mountainbiking.
This will be the first time that the competition for the three disciplines will be competed in one setting, as it's only bmx and skateboarding that were played together.
This is also the first time that a local organizer is putting up his own ramps and quarterpipes for the skateboarding contest, unlike in the other extreme competitions held here wherein obstacles were transported from Manila.
BMX and skateboard will have three classes namely the open, juniors and novice while the mountainbike will have the seniors, juniors, veterans, masters, golden boys, beginners, fat boys and executive levels.
The first day will be a preliminary round, the second day with the pre-finals and the last day with the final battle among the best in the different heats.
However, if there will be lesser number of participants in a category, they will automatically move up to the higher round or have its first race as the final run.
Close to P30,000 is at stake with the mountainbike event having the bulk of the cash prizes plus trophies and medals for the winners of the different events in the event supported by Cebu Grand Hotel, Rocky Mountain Sports, Classical Touch, Dew Foam, Dura Brand, YKK Trading, GAP/Mobile and Toes.
