Dy leads cast into quarterfinals

Topseed Mark Dy led the cast of favorites who marched on to the next round in the matchplay stage of the Cebu Country Club Championships yesterday.

Dy, who took the top slot by virtue of scoring the lowest gross in the two-day qualifying round over the weekend, stopped Jonji Chiongbian, 2-up to advance to a quarterfinal showdown with Joseph Stevens (8), who edged Tadashi Ochiai, 1-up.

Number two ranked and six-time club champion Ramontito Garcia dropped Gilbert Yap (15), 2 and 1 and will face the youthful Charles Hong (10), who scored a convincing 4 and 3 victory over Marko Sarmiento (7).

Defending champion and number three-ranked Eric Deen, who thumped Marc Gonzalez, 7-up, will meet Korean actor Joshua Kim (11), who won 4 and 3 against Gabriel Yap, Jr.

The last match for the club championship quarterfinals will pit former jungolf champion Jojo Tiongko (4), who topped George Hong, Charles father, 2 and 1, against former club champion Jovi Neri (5), who scored a 5 and 4 victory over Susumu Hangai (12).

In the other divisions, the semifinal matches will be played today.

The seniors' matches will pit two players, who scored walkover victories yesterday against two, who had to pull win through the eye of the needle.

Boy Gonzaga (8) who won by default over Joseph Yukayguan (1) will meet Ben Dapat (5), who edged Rudy Lizares (4), 1-up.

Second-ranked Masaya 'Happy' Hishida, who also won by default over Masatsugi Ochiai (7), will face Sammy darza (3), who slipped past Julius Neri (6), 1-up.

In class B, Kenneth Dyguani (8), who upset top ranked Wendell Yap yesterday 4 and 3, will clash with Anthony Bejar (5), who scored a 3 and 2 win over Nolan Rada (4).

The other match for the handicap class pits second-ranked Michael Go, who scored a 4 and 2 win over Jimmy Sy (7), against the young Charles Daniel Uy (6), who dumped Alex Garcia (3), 5 and 4.

Topseed Bruno Gonzalez advanced to the semis of class C after knocking off Ed Alegrado (8), 4 and 2. He will face Andrew Si (5), who stomped Jose Luis Madrazo (4), 4 and 3.

Jojo Ong (3), who won by default over Jose Mari Cañizares (6), will meet Henry Dy (2), who scored a 2 and 1 win over Hidetaka Murano (7).

In class D, Topseed Masao Koike meets Boy Barcelo (5) while Shigekazu Sakunaga (2) battles Antonio Baltazar (3).

In the superseniors' category Anthony Jackson (1) faces Chiaki Endo (4) and Danny Deen (2) meets Luis Velez (3).
