Leyte Selection claims crown of 38-above class in inter-club

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -
The visiting Leyte Selection bagged the title in the 38 years old and above division of the 6th Cebu Inter-Club Football Tournament after blanking Queen City United, 2-0, in the final match yesterday afternoon at the University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus field.

The two teams figured in the final after Queen City filed a protest against Don Bosco Alumni. Hiroshi, the fourth team in the category was reportedly also planning to file a protest, but did not pursue it for unknown reasons.

Some players, who refused to be identified said it is unfair for the Queen City team to file the protest since many of its players are also part of the organizing committee.

Allen Perez broke the ice for Leyte just two minutes into the game.

Queen City further suffered a major blow as its goalkeeper suffered a head injury 20 minutes into the game after a bad fall while trying to go for a save.

With four minutes to go in the first half, Leyte scored once again via a penalty kick.

Queen City went all out in the second half, but just could not find its mark despite controlling the game and getting several attempts at the goal.

The semifinal cast for the ladies division is now complete. The D' Davao Survivors team will clash with Mullbachs while defending champion Queen City United battles the belles from Cagayan de Oro City.

The DDS squad dumped Don Bosco College, 13-1, behind the efforts of Merlou Albano, who scored six of Davao's goals. She made five in the first half alone.

Lomalyn Fama and Rachael Delos Reyes contributed two goals apiece and Roseton Baniñan and Analou Ingles had a goal each.

Davao was comfortably up after the first half, 6-1, and never looked back from there.

In the men's open class, defending champion Hiroshi showed that it is still a force to reckon with after pulling a 1-0 victory against West Negros College of Bacolod.

Junard Aguilar scored the lone goal of the game on the 23rd minute.

The win gave Hiroshi a share of the top spot with Bacolod with 3-1 win-loss records.

Don Bosco-Fugsport trails the pacesetters with two wins and a loss while Dumaguete and Queen City have identical 1-2 win-loss cards.
