Clear the way as Z Gorres and Amonsot arrive today

-
They may not get a hero's welcome, but ALA Boxing Gym stars Z "The Dream" Gorres and Czar Amonsot rightfully deserve a warm reception upon their return to Cebu today from a successful conquest in the United States.

Gorres and Amonsot reaffirmed the Filipino boxers' dominance over the Mexicans by scoring a similarly impressive unanimous decision victory over Jose Alfredo Tirado and Christian Favela, respectively, last Saturday at the Mardi Gras Ballroom of Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

So imposing the Mandaue City-native Gorres was that boxing scholar Mike Sloan of fightnews.com remarked that "Gorres appears to be a threat in the super flyweight division."

In his report, Sloan said the fight was never close as Gorres controlled the pace from the outset, allowing his pesky right jab and stifling straight left to befuddle Tirado.

Gorres, WBO ranked No.4 and IBF No.9 super flyweight contender, wobbled Tirado on a few occasions, but the tough Mexican refused to buck down and stayed on his feet for the duration of the contest.

The scores were 98-91 twice and 99-90 all for Gorres, who improved to 22-1-1 with 11KOs.

"Gorres was relentless in his pursuit of victory but he tended to be a little one-dimensional and too reliant on his left hand. Had he been able or willing to mix up his fistic repertoire, he may have had a better showing," said Sloan.

Amonsot, on the other hand, started to make a name in the US just like his Boholano townmate and ALA stablemate Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista.

Amonsot, the reigning WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight champion, pulled off a bloody win via unanimous verdict over the very durable Favela. The scores were 78-73 and 77-74 twice all for theTagbilaran City fighter.

"Although Amonsot pressed the action for most of the fight, the game Favela landed his fair share of blows. But in the end, the quick and powerful combinations of Amonsot won him the decision," stated Sloan.

Although nothing is definite yet with regards to Amonsot's next fight, Gorres now trains his sights on his forthcoming Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) jr. bantamweight title bout against Thai Waenpetch Chuwatana on March 18 at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
