Gorres, Amonsot win in US

The remarkable US invasion of the Filipino boxers continued with ALA Boxing Gym stalwarts Z "The Dream" Gorres and Czar Amonsot crushing their respective Mexican foes yesterday at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The WBO ranked No.4 and IBF No.9 super flyweight contender Gorres beat Jose Alfredo Tirado by 10-round shutout, while Amonsot, the reigning WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight champion, made an auspicious US debut by outlasting Christian Favela also by unanimous verdict.

"Gorres was very impressive because his opponent was made-to-order. Even noted American trainer Freddie Roach was very impressed with the way Gorres fought," said ALA Stable top honcho Antonio "Bidoy" L. Aldeguer, the manager of Gorres and Amonsot.

It was Gorres' second straight win in the US as he bettered his win-loss-draw record to 22-1-1 spiked with 12KOs. In his US debut, Gorres scored a first round knockout of Fil-Am Glenn Donaire underneath the Pacquiao-Morales I on March 25 last year.

Gorres also stretched his win streak to 10 since absorbing his first and lone defeat so far by ninth round stoppage to Edgar Rodrigo that cost him his RP flyweight belt on June 1, 2003 in Makati City.

Gorres sets his sights next on his forthcoming Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) championship fight against Thai Waenpetch Chuwatana on March 18 at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

Amonsot, on the other hand, once again put Bohol on the international boxing map with his victory over Favela.

Amonsot went for the kill in the early rounds, but failed to deliver as the durable Favela gallantly stood his ground and kept his lofty reputation for not having been knocked out in his seven-year pro career.

"Although he did not knock out his very durable opponent, Amonsot was very happy for winning his first fight in the US," said Aldeguer.

The Tagbilaran City-native Amonsot now holds an improved 15-1 win-loss ledger with 10 wins by knockout.
