Team Cebu City Dancesport has found a new home they can call its own after five years of fruitful stay at Emotions Dance Studio.
Yesterday, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña graced the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new haven of Team Cebu City Dancesport at the multi-purpose hall of the Cebu City Sports Center.
The group was given the privilege in to stay for free at the LU YM building located at Juan Osmeña since 2001 but its owner asked them to vacate the place on December 24 since it will be used as an English school for the Koreans.
"They were very kind to us. It was the last space they gave up just to accommodate us. But it was a miracle that I was with Ricky Ballesteros when they called me so he offered us to use this place with the blessing of out mayor. Thank you because you turned an ordinary housewives to champions because of your support," said TCC Danceport director Edward Hayco.
The group was able to transform the multi-purpose hall into a lively dance hall painted in orange for only two days.
The multi-purpose hall was used to hold classes for karatedo.
The dance floor is where the talents of Southeast Asian Games champions Michael Mendoza and Dearly Gerodias were honed.
Hayco also presented to the crowd seven-year old Niño Dante Malazarte as the ideal face of dancesport, whose meager earnings in dancing helped fed family and even sent his two siblings to school.
Osmeña, on the other hand, plans to institutionalized its practice and will set up proper training and hire instructors.
"We try to bridge the gap between you and the City Government since our objective is to make Cebu City the dancesport capital of Asia. And to achieve this endeavor, our strategy is to get everybody involve not only to a limited group but reach out to other areas until it will become part of out culture," Osmeña said.
Osmeña added that dancesport will play an important role when Cebu City hosts the ASEAN Summit next year by providing entertainment.
