In badminton, they're still the undisputed champions. In volleyball, they're bridesmaid no more.
Keeping up their spirited run in the elimination round, The Freeman athletes went on to sweep the badminton and volleyball titles of the Cebu City Mayor's Cup Tri-Medialympics 2005 yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Backed by La Fleche, The Freeman shuttlecock artists collected all four crowns at stake in badminton, with columnist Michael O. Yu and general manager Melandro "Boy" M. Mendoza leading the charge, whacking Cebu Daily News tandem of Rick Gabuya and Ronald Natulla in straight sets, 15-13, 15-2 to rule the men's doubles event.
It was a double celebration for Mike Yu as he also outlasted CDN's Natulla, 15-4, 17-4 to top the singles class.
TF's women's squad also pulled off a stellar twinkill, with marketing manager Tina Poblador and Emerald Quiapo coming from behind to frustrate Sun.Star Daily's Cherry Ann Lim and Ellen Joyce Soriano, 10-15, 15-4, 15-8.
In the singles categoty, Trisha Gullas did no let her teammates down by thrashing Sun.Star's Rianne Tecson, 11-5, 11-3.
In volleyball, the Mint Sportshop-sponsored The Freeman spikers seized their historic first ever championship via a four-game sweep capped by a masterful 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 demolition of Cebu Daily News.
The Freeman of playing coach Nimrod NL Quiñones, the paper's managing editor, earlier slammed CDN, dyHP, and Sun.Star to march into the finals undefeated.
The dethroned champion Sun.Star could only settle for third place this year after defeating dyHP, 25-15, 25-17.
