USJ-R, USP start strong in CESAFI beach volley

- Sona Mae V. Povadora -
The University of San Jose-Recoletos women's squad coasted to its fourth straight victory in as many games, while USJ-R and University of Southern Philippines lead the charge in the men's division with two victories each at the start of the 1st Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation, Inc. beach volleyball event yesterday at Wiggy's Beach Resort in Liloan.

Banking on the superb showing of Mechell Matuguina and Jullet Marikit, runner-up to Southwestern University in this year's Nestea Beach Volleyball in Boracay, the USJ-R belles zapped University of the Visayas, 21-16, to open up their title campaign.

Matuguina and Marikit then preyed on Jurine Francis and Jessa Satina of Southwestern University, 21-15, before walloping the University of San Carlos, 21-12, and University of Cebu, 21-14.

SWU, on the other hand, won two of its assignments, whipping UC, 21-15, and USP, 21-16.

USP though did no go home empty-handed as it trounced UC, 21-15, in the same way with UC, which dumped USC, 21-9.

In the men's division, USJ-R, powered by Jonrey Sasing and Joseph Alguno, crushed UV, 21-9, before it battled through a 21-29 triumph over the stubborn USC.

USP earned a share of the lead with USJ-R on identical 2-0 win-loss slates with victories over UC, 25-23, and UV, 21-18.

In the other games, USC defeated UC, 21-17, but UC quickly bounced backed with 21-15 win over UV.
