GUV Cup organizers spot potential athletic scholars

- Sona Mae V. Povadora -
The 1st Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup has opened the door for potential athletes to enjoy scholarship grants in some of the leading universities here.

The provincewide tournament is left with two more cluster matches this weekend in Daanbantayan (cluster IV) and Mandaue City (cluster VI) as it successfully finished four clusters held in Talisay, Alcoy, Alcantara, and recently in Carmen/Camotes Island.

In a short span of time, the organizing Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) has spotted promising players in Catmon, Sogod, Alcantara, Alcoy, Argao, and Barili as young as 12 years old.

Cebu Sports Hall of Famer Grace Antigua, the assistant tournament director, has eyed some players from Catmon and Sogod whom she felt are potential addition to her lineup in the University of San Jose-Recoletos.

"Daghan maayo na mga players, it would be nice to give them more exposure and chance kay sayang ilang talents. But it's up to them to choose what school they want," said Antigua.

Technical committee chairperson Nona Catipay added it is CEVA's dream to help players in the provinces get scholarships in different colleges and universities through volleyball.

"We are doing this not only to promote volleyball but also to promote the sports development," said CEVA president Glenn Anthony Soco.

Soco is also encouraging the respective mayors to have their own volleyball program for the continuity of Gov. Gwen Garcia's project.

"Hopefully we will have more teams joining next year," said Soco.
