UV, UC score big in CESAFI 2005

The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters are the biggest winners in the 2005 edition of the Cebu School's Athletic Federation, Inc., (CESAFI).
The Green Lancers made historic victories in the premier basketball and football events in the competition set as selection for athletes which will represent Cebu in the regional Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) meet sometime next year here in Cebu City.
The Lancers captured their fifth championship trophy in the seniors basketball event behind bench-tactician Elmer "Boy" Cabahug.
They tore into pieces the UC Webmasters, 76-55, allowing their opponents only two points in the entire third quarter.
The feat of the seniors team followed the championship victory of their juniors counterparts, who had to pass by the proverbial eye of the needle before dispatching the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildkittens, 67-66.
In the distaff side, it was the UC Lady Webmasters, who captured the throne via a 68-63 thrashing of the University of San Carlos Lady Warriors.
The UV Green Lancers scored a big upset over defending champion USJ-R, who was bidding for its fifth consecutive championship title in the tertiary football event.
The victory of the Lancers, who has been relegated to third place in the previous CESAFI events, was made even sweeter as they blanked the defending champions with a deafening 4-0 scoring at the Sacred Heart-Jesuit field.
The Webmasters grabbed 20 gold medals including 20 silvers and seven bronze medals in the track and field competition at the Cebu City Sports Center.
A far second with a tab of 9-6-11 gold-silver-bronze is USJ-R and University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) completed the top three with 7-10-9.
Southwestern University (SWU) grabbed two golds and four bronze medals for fourth and UV clinched one gold, one silver and one bronze medal for fourth place.
UC bets topped in the men's action behind the efforts of brothers Emmanuel Motel, Jay Impuesto and Glendo Nayre while USJ-R ruled the women's side with Gloria Belandres, Jr.,
The debut of dancesport in the CESAFI saw USC and UC taking the coveted plum in their respective divisions.
The duo of Laurence John Limosnero and Prince Laurence Inocando topped in the Standard event over bets from UC, SWU and UV.
Reymar Ruiz and Analy Villarte of UC, on the other hand, caught the eye of the judges in the Latin category, winning over USC, SWU and UV.
The USC swim team ran away with the championship title in the tertiary level, winning 26 gold, 18 silver and 16 bronze medals and UC followed with 13 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals.
Velez College is at third with 3 gold and 2 silver medals and UV finished with 8 silvers and 7 bronze medals.
USJ-R reaffirmed its dominance in volleyball by grabbing the championship title in both the men and women's division over USPF.
Cebu Sports Hall of Fame Grace Antigua steered both teams to the championship crown.
