USJ-R, UC score sweep in CESAFI chess event

- Sona Mae V. Povadora -
The University of San Jose-Recoletos swept the men and women's titles in the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation, Inc. chess event last Sunday at the Bibo Chess Club.

Spearheading USJ-R's triumph in the men's division were Jose Roble, the juniors division champion in the Visayas leg of the National Active Shell Chess Championship, Delfin Yano, John De Veyra and Jo Florence.

USJ-R was actually tied with the University of San Carlos, which also posted 19.0 points, but the Josenians went on to claim the title by virtue of the winner-over-the-other rule having beaten the Carolinians in their encounter, 3-1.

On the other hand, the women's squad, powered by Therese Gonzales, Sarah Jane Letegio, Sheila Alvarado, and Mary Llenos, registered 17.5 points to dethrone University of Cebu.

UC's Lorie Mae Seno, Jennifer Abejan, Mary Grace Gacay, and Lyndace Mantupa finished second with 14.5 points, while Cebu Institute of Technology landed at third place with 12 points.

In the secondary division, UC also swept the boys and girls titles.

Cy Balbanera, Jay Relampagos, Herbert Daono and Jabber Casan combined for 14.5 points to power UC to an unprecedented fifth straight championship in the boys class. USC was way behind at second with 8.5 points, while USJ-R finished third with 8.0 points.

UC's girls team also duplicated the feat of its boys counterparts by nailing 7.0 points behind Jacek Bucoy, Janina Ebrado, Catherine Hugoi and Rhea Famat to clinch the crown.
