Terry Fox Run kicks off today

-
Canadian Ambassador Peter Sutherland is expected to grace the Terry Fox Run today with close to 2,000 runners joining the third edition of the Cebu leg.

The first edition here in Cebu in 2001 attracted around 500 runners and the participation reached to 1,500 in its revival last year.

Terry Fox is one of Canada's youngest and most popular folk hero, who lost his right leg in 1977 due to cancer. He was able to overcome his disability and was even able to raise millions of dollars for a cancer research through running.

He succumbed to cancer in June 1981 but his legacy became an inspiration to millions of people all over the world.

The proceeds and funds raised in the Terry Fox Run, also known as the Marathon of Hope here in the country, will go to the Philippine Cancer Society, which will be used for cancer treatment.

"Please show your support to a worthwhile cause by joining us in this fun run. You need only to walk, run, bike, or even rollerblade for five kilometers to share the gift of life," said Ambassador Sutherland.

Aside from Sutherland, Cebu City Vice-mayor Michael Rama, Canada Honorary Consul Robert Lee and representatives from the Philippine Cancer Society are also expected to grace the event. - Caecent No-ot
