USJ-R scores double in CESAFI volleyball

- Sona Mae V. Povadora -
The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) volleyball team scored double over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) as they romped off with the championship titles in both the men and women's division in the Cebu

Yesterday was the second time for USJ-R to win a double championship since 2001 and it was made even sweeter especially for the women's team who went on a title drought for four years.

The feat was achieved under the coaching of multi-awarded Grace Angtigua and assistant Norvie Labuga.

It was the men's team who got the test of real toughness as they survived the equally formidable USPF squad, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 15-10.

Although, USJ-R started strong in the opening set, USP enforced an iron curtain to block the killer spikes of veteran Jonrey Sasing of USJ-R.

Losing its key setter Clifford Café was also a big factor for USP after the board disqualified him and they were left with one setter Ramil Espinosa.

"This is supposed to be his last year. I was confused why they have to carry his participation in the CAAA. He is my trusted setter," said USP coach Cecil Jotojot. CESAFI only allows five playing years and this year would be Café's sixth consecutive year, including the CAAA.

It was a close call for USJ-R, which is composed mostly of new players but their unwavering teamwork and consistency proved otherwise. "I was nervous because they are a tough squad. Most of my players are new. My setters are first year players. The setter is so important, it's the heart of the game, " said the delighted Antigua.

On the other hand, the women's team first clinched the crown in straight sets, 25-15, 25-10, 25-21.

Michelle Matuguina, who helped carry the team to victory, left a memorable mark as she won her first and last tournament with a bang.

In the battle for third, University of the San Carlos hacked out a 25-19, 15, 25, 22-25, 25-9, 15-10 victory over University of the Visayas in the men's team, while UV women's team bounced back dumping last year's champion Southwestern University, 18-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-16.
