Playing with slight fever, Cebuano netter Jacob Lagman showed why he is the country's best by coveting the plum in the unisex 10-under division to offset his loss in the boys 12-under class in yesterday's Olivarez Veterans and Age Group Tennis tournament in Parañaque City.
Despite not playing in his usual form, the 10-year old Lagman of St. Benedict Childhood Education Center summoned all his strength to keep the game going by routing Mark Escares 6-1, 6-1, to bag the 10-under diadem.
"Ayoko sana mag laro si Jacob kasi may lagnat, kapon pa (the other day). But sayang man kaysa mag default siya. In between the game, nagpupunas siya ng sipon," said his ever-supportive mother Julie.
The win earned Jacob 80 points in the Philippine Lawn Tennis Association ranking.
"Malayo na ang points ni Jacob, mahirap ng habolin," added Julie.
However, another championship battle proved too much for the young Lagman in the 12-under as he bowed to Kim Polero but not without a putting up with a courageous fight, 4-6, 4-6.
"Ang maganda kay Jacob hindi nasiraan ng loob, " Julie said.
But, Jacob, who is the RP's number in boys 12-under gained 50 points.
