Shell Active Chess registration closes

- Sona Mae V. Povadora -
The registration is close for the Cebu Leg- Shell National Active Chess Tournament which is slated to kick off 10 a.m. on August 20 at the Entertainment Plaza in SM City Cebu.

"The deadline is supposedly one week before the tournament, but all the slots are filled so we have to close the registration and as per guideline slots are limited to 500 only," said Cebu Leg organizer Visayas coordinator Ben Macapaz.

A total of 256 are listed in the kiddies division and another 244 in the juniors with Sacred Heart School-Jesuit making up the bulk of the participants in both categories.

Cebu's strongest bets in the kiddies are Fiel Yves of Argao and University of San Jose Recoletos' Yuri Cauva and Jessa Balbona while in the juniors division is former kiddies champion and last year's junior national finalist Kim Steven Yap, Jose Roble, Jr., last year's third placer Julius Albina of Argao and Jimsoon Bitoon, nephew of NM Richard Bitoon

Out of town players are also not to be outdone with Holy Name University and Grace Christian School of Bohol to bank on the brilliance of Filway champion Jedara Dolcena and his younger brother, Jerard, the CVIRAA champion.

Lennon Salgados, the champion in the Filway Visayas Actvie Open boys division is another favorite from Cagayan de Oro City while Joel Pimentel and Richard Cajeras from Bacolod are also seeing action.
