Garcia launches 1st Governor's Unity V-ball Cup

- Sona Mae V. Povadora -
Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia hopes to foster closer ties and bonding among the towns in the province with the launching of the 1st Governor Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup yesterday at the Capitol Social Hall.

"This first sports activity I am launching will give special favor for the women," said Garcia during the launching, which was part of the opening of Cebu's 436th founding anniversary celebration.

The event, tentatively set this October with no confirmed venue, is aimed at scouting for potentials capable of bannering Cebu's campaign in future national and international competitions and also produce volleyball legends in the likes of the Jao twins - Marilu and Marichu and Grace Antigua.

"We are so thankful to Governor Gwen for supporting volleyball," said Glen Anthony Soco, president of the Cebu Volleyball Association which will be tasked to run the event.

The participating teams will be grouped according to congressional districts where they belong.

The district champions will receive P20,000, while the overall champion pockets a whopping P100,000 paycheck.

Aside from the MVP, special citations will also be handed out including the best libero, best spiker, best setter and best blocker.

The teams must be composed of 12 players and must be a resident of the municipality. They are allowed though to reinforce their team with two non-resident players.

Players are required to submit barangay certificates, voter's ID or SK ID for players aged 18-below, upon registration.

Further details will be discussed during the final meeting with CEVA and representatives of the participatins municipalities on August 19.
