Coffee break

Sipping a hot cup of freshly brewed coffee in the kind of weather we've been having the past few weeks is something I have always looked forward to.

The warmth of coffee and the company that you are with makes you feel better about the weather despite the fact that you probably just had your car washed 30 minutes before rain started to pour. Tough luck!

That seems always the case for me and I'm sure I am not alone. Oh well, why don't you also just sit down and sip a hot cup of coffee.

While I have coffee with all sorts of people for business or pleasure, I often look forward to Monday mornings with my fellow football parents, whom I hang out with after we take our kids to school.

We talk about almost everything from our children's football training to business, academics, and other matters that would interest us.

A few days ago, I had another worthwhile coffee experience when I chanced upon Ramon Rubia. Ramon is a Fil-Am, who is an arnis world champion and married to my good friend Eva Cañete, also a world arnis champion, and they now have three kids.

I met Ramon for the first time in 1994 when he came to the Philippines as a member of Team USA in the World Arnis Championships in Muntinlupa. It was also there that his relationship with Eva started. That is of course another story, but I won't go into the details.

Since we're both into martial arts, it was only natural that we talked about the state of arnis and how the sport has evolved in what it is today. We could not also help but touch a little on certain controversies hounding the sport, but then we don't really want to dwell much on things that do arnis no good.

While the added knowledge I got about arnis or eskrima was already something that made our conversation worthwhile, I discovered something else - Ramon knows so much about Cebuano history that most of us.

What made me feel more uncomfortable about it is the fact that he is not even Cebuano. He learned about all this in the course of his study of arnis and its evolution. I admire his effort and I wish him the best in his quest for more information.

This is something I appreciate a lot about martial arts practitioners who work beyond just learning the moves and winning the gold medals in every competition. Martial arts have so much to do about culture and not just simply a way to stay alive or be unscathed when you get into trouble.

I'm looking forward to more coffee breaks that offer a learning experience. Too bad I had to rush and cut our conversation short. Until next time Ramon.

The Mandaue City Government has thrown its all out support to the Mantawi Hapee-Dew Foam Sparkling Nights in the National Basketball Conference (NBC).

Mayor Thadeo Z. Ouano seems to always find time to visit if not be at the venue during the home games of the team.

The sports complex's air-conditioning is being used during the games of the team and the basketball-loving Mandauehanons have also shown a lot of appreciation and support to the squad.

The other night, it was kind of difficult getting out of the parking lot with all the people in cars, who went there to watch the game.

Worthwhile entertainment is surely something that the fans will flock to.
