ABS-CBN Kapamilya and Sun.Star Daily blasted
their respective foes to stay unbeaten in the 2005 Newsmen Basketball Association of Cebu (NBAC) Gov. Gwen Garcia Cup yesterday at the City Sports Club of Cebu gym.
In the main game, Cebu Daily News/RPN-9 chalked up its first victory of the season after diffusing the Bombo Radyo/ABC-21 Bombers, 53-38.
Before that, ABS-CBN Kapamilya smothered the winless CCTN-47/Bantay Radyo, 54-43, for its third straight win in as many games, while Sun.Star Daily conquered The Freeman/Aksiyon Radyo, 69-45.
ABS-CBN Kapamilya now holds the temporary lead with a 3-0 win-loss record, while Sun.Star shares the second spot with GMA-7 Kapuso on identical 2-0 win-loss marks.
Efren Lonzon topped with 19 points, while Jade Violeta, who will turn a year older today, added 11 markers, for Sun.Star, which used a 12-0 run to deal The Freeman/Aksiyon Radyo its worst defeat in the two-year-old league.
Sun.Star's lead ballooned to as much as 26 points, but The Freeman/Aksiyon Radyo fought back to trim the lead down to 13 points, 40-53, late in the third canto.
But that was the best The Freeman/Aksiyon Radyo could muster as the Sun.Star mainstays shut down their opponents in the closing minutes of the game to seal the 24-point rout.
Manny Villaruel scored only two points in the first two quarters of play, but went hot in the second half to finish with a game-high 26 points, albeit for a losing cause.
