Stepdad suspected in boy’s death

Shiela Mae Agrabio - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Police are conducting a hot-pursuit operation for the stepfather of a 14-year-old boy whose death was initially reported as a suicide in Minglanilla town, Cebu.

The man, who has not been located since the incident, is now being considered a suspect in the boy’s death, based on the initial investigation.

Last Monday, August 24, the stepfather reportedly sought help from neighbors and told them that his stepson had taken his own life.

Responding police officers were then led by the man to a tree about 50 meters from their house, where they found the boy’s body hanging.

However, police became suspicious after observing the position of the body and suspected possible foul play.

Officers asked the stepfather to accompany them to the hospital, but he allegedly refused and fled. While running away, he reportedly shouted that he did not kill the boy.

Police later received information from a minor witness who allegedly said the stepfather had strangled the boy earlier. The boy’s mother also provided the information to police.

The mother was in Cebu City at the time of the incident, where she worked as a helper.

Police have already conducted an autopsy on the boy as the investigation continues.

The boy’s remains were scheduled to be buried yesterday, August 27.

Authorities continue to search for the stepfather as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death. – BRP (CEBU NEWS)
