Man hurt in shootout with cops

CEBU, Philippines — A 34-year-old construction worker was wounded after he allegedly engaged police officers in a gunfight in Barangay Calajo-an, Minglanilla town, Cebu, last Wednesday morning, August 26.

Police identified the man, who goes by the alias “Van”, as a high-value individual in the illegal drug trade. He is a resident of Purok Santolan and is currently confined at the Minglanilla District Hospital under police custody.

The incident began after the Station Drug Enforcement Unit received a report at around 8:35 A.M. about a reportedly armed and intoxicated man allegedly disturbing residents in Purok Santolan.

Police said responding officers saw Van carrying a gun. When they moved toward him, he allegedly fired at them, prompting the officers to shoot back.

Van suffered a gunshot wound and was brought to the hospital for medical attention.

Recovered by police was a .38 cal. revolver containing four live rounds and one spent cartridge.

Authorities also recovered one medium-sized packet and 10 triangular sachets containing suspected shabu. The seized items weighed a total of 3.59 grams and had an estimated standard drug price of ?24,412.

Police are set to file charges against Van for alleged violations of Section 11, Article II of Republic Act 9165, Republic Act 10591, and Article 155 of the Revised Penal Code. -  BRP (CEBU NEWS)
