Cebu City eyes animation-based learning

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival is eyeing the use of animation-based learning in public schools, a move that could potentially position the city ahead of the rest in integrating creative technology into classroom learning.

This came after a meeting with Velvet Pixel executives Ivan Dave Basio, the Chief Executive Officer, and Raven Carusle Tabanera, the Chief Operating Officer, who presented their proposal to use animated lessons as supplementary teaching materials.

The Cebu-based studio showcased a sample animated module on fractions featuring Philippine endemic animals, emphasizing that animation can make lessons more engaging and easier to understand for young learners.

Archival, for his part, welcomed the idea and encouraged the team to submit a formal proposal for city government review.

If approved, Cebu City would serve as the pilot area, beginning with Kindergarten and Grade 1 learners in selected public schools.

Velvet Pixel also plans to coordinate with the Department of Education Cebu City Division to ensure that the animated content aligns with the national curriculum.

Animation, defined by education experts as the use of moving graphics and visual storytelling to explain concepts, has been shown to improve comprehension and retention by combining imagery, sound, and narrative.

Archival calls the initiative part of his vision for a “future-ready generation,” highlighting the role of homegrown Cebuano creativity in shaping smarter, more interactive education for public school students. (CEBU NEWS)
