Fall from tree kills man
CEBU, Philippines — A 68-year-old man died after he allegedly fell from a talisay tree while gathering leaves for his pet goat in Purok Kawayan, Barangay Cabiangon, Pinamungajan, Cebu. His body was discovered at around 6 A.M. on Friday, July 3.
The victim was identified by the Pinamungajan Municipal Police Station as Benedicto Nelmida, a resident of Purok Rose, Barangay Rizal, Pinamungajan.
Police said they responded to a report from residents about a lifeless man found beneath a talisay tree.
Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers found the victim beneath the tree with his left hand still clutching a bundle of talisay leaves.
Authorities learned that the body was first spotted by a resident who had been tending to his cattle in the area. The witness immediately reported the incident to the police.
Investigators also gathered statements from neighbors, who said Nelmida was last seen on Thursday afternoon carrying a bolo.
He was reportedly intoxicated after consuming several bottles of liquor and was believed to be on his way to gather leaves to feed his goat.
During the scene examination, police found several broken branches on the talisay tree, strengthening the theory that the victim had fallen while climbing it.
Investigators likewise found no indication of foul play.
Based on statements from the victim’s relatives, the scene examination, and the medico-legal assessment, investigators concluded that Nelmida sustained fatal head and body injuries after falling from the tree, which ultimately caused his death. — (FREEMAN)
