Through Santacruzan: Vendors protest Carbon privatization

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Save Carbon Market Movement continued its opposition to the privatization of Carbon Market in Cebu City and turned the traditional Santacruzan into an avenue to voice their appeals on Friday, May 29.

The movement commenced with an 8:00 am Holy Mass at the Iglesia Filipina Independiente Cathedral in Parian followed by a procession to the Carbon Market.

During the procession, “reynas” showcased costumes, with some made with local products such as woven fans, sacks, and slippers. Attached to these were printed messages and placards with their calls of protest against the future management of the Carbon Market.

The Santacruzan, held in observance of the Month of Mary, was not just a protest but a form of prayer for the Virgin Mary for guidance, protection, and the hope that the group’s concerns would be heard.

Members of the movement distributed red roses and flyers to the spectators along the route.

The flyers contain their concerns over the rise in rent and entrance fees mandated by the Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) between the city government and Cebu2World Megawide, which they strongly oppose.

According to Maria Pino Buanghug, chairperson of Cebu City United Vendors Association (CCUVA), in the 42 years that the group was established, this is the biggest problem they have faced.

She clarified that they are not against modernization, but against privatization. They believe the agreement failed to consider their welfare and livelihood.

One of their biggest concerns is the entrance and rental fees, which Cebu2World Megawide once assured would be affordable for vendors.

However, according to one of the vendors, these fees would be a lot for them, adding that they wish Megawide would make it more affordable.

The group also called on the government to communicate with them properly and hopes that by reviewing the JVA, they will be more considerate of their situation.

"Kanang tinuod nga resulta sa pagbasa, kanang kita ang mga flaws, mga sayop, ug makita among mga gikahadlokan nga naa sa agreement. Ablihan unta ang mata sa magbasa sa agreement. Sabton sad unta ug isulod sa kasingkasing,” Buanghug said.

The group is asking for public support as it continues its calls opposing the privatization of the Carbon Market.  — Michaela Tabar/MRM (FREEMAN)
