Metro Cebu air still “unhealthy”
CEBU, Philippines — The air quality in Metro Cebu remains at varying levels, with CAAQMS–Talisay Station reaching a level classified as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.”
This is according to the latest air quality monitoring of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB)-7 as of 8 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
Based on the latest monitoring data, PM2.5 levels in Talisay City were recorded under the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category, while PM10 remained under “Fair” air quality.
The same monitoring further showed that meteorological data gathered during the monitoring period indicated a temperature of 30.8 degrees Celsius, a wind speed of 2 meters per second, and winds blowing from the east-southeast.
In line with these data, the EMB advised individuals belonging to sensitive groups, including children, senior citizens, and persons with respiratory or heart conditions, to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities due to possible health effects caused by elevated PM2.5 levels.
As explained, PM2.5 refers to fine inhalable particles measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and may trigger respiratory and cardiovascular problems, particularly among vulnerable individuals.
EMB-7 said the general public is less likely to experience serious health impacts, although precautionary measures are still encouraged.
The agency, however, assured that it will continue to closely monitor air quality conditions in Metro Cebu and issue updates when necessary to guide the public. — /IHM (FREEMAN)
