Cop, suspect hurt in gunfight
CEBU, Philippines — A policeman was wounded while a suspect was injured after a shootout during the serving of a warrant of arrest in Barangay Biasong, Balamban town, last Sunday morning, May 17.
According to police, operatives of the Balamban Municipal Police Station went to the residence of a 27-year-old unemployed man, identified only as alias “Jey-An”, who was the subject of a warrant for qualified theft issued on May 6, 2026, with a recommended bail of ?40,000.
Police said the team introduced themselves and informed the suspect of the warrant upon arriving in the area.
However, two individuals identified as alias “Richard”, the suspect’s brother, and alias “Fred”, allegedly opened fire at the responding officers, prompting a firefight.
The police returned fire, hitting “Fred”, who was later brought to the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Balamban for medical treatment.
One police officer sustained a gunshot wound during the exchange, although authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the injured personnel, confirming only that a police officer was wounded but is in stable condition.
Authorities arrested “Jey-An” and “Fred”, while “Richard” managed to escape after the incident.
Recovered from the scene were a .45 cal. pistol with three live rounds and around 10 grams of suspected shabu worth an estimated ?68,000, police said.
Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and the possible filing of additional charges. — BRP CEBU NEWS
