Sidewalk vendors reminded to observe discipline
CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival recently met with sidewalk vendors to push forward his campaign for discipline and order in public spaces.
The latest group of vendors the mayor met was from piers 1 and 3, Sitio Sampaguita in Capitol Site, Manggahan, Don Mariano Cui, and Cabancalan in Talamban earlier this week.
He emphasized that while the city recognizes the vendors’ need to earn a living, their operations must be organized, regulated, and aligned with sanitation standards.
“Klaro ang tumong: tabangan sila, pero sabay ana, i-organize ug i-discipline ang atong public space,” Archival said in a social media post.
He reminded them that stalls must be uniform and orderly.
Each vendor must provide a trash bin, and cleanliness of their areas is their responsibility.
For locations deemed unsuitable for vending, Archival promised to actively seek alternative legal and safe sites where vendors can continue their livelihood without disrupting pedestrian flow or community order.
“Atong giistoryahan nga kinahanglan una sila maihan-ay before makabalik og tinda. Para sa mga lugar nga dili gyud pwede baligyaan, actively ta mangita og lain nga locations nga legal ug safe para nila makapanginabuhi,” he added.
Earlier, inspections at the North Bus Terminal, Kaohsiung Street, and B. Rodriguez Street highlighted safety concerns, prompting the mayor to order the removal of hazards and installation of streetlights.
Vendors in those areas expressed support for the enforcement, acknowledging that discipline and cooperation were necessary for their continued presence in public spaces.
