Only 150 slots available for Mandaue scholarship

Kristin De Dios - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Mandaue City government has revealed that only 150 scholarship slots are available this year, despite receiving around 900 applications for its program.

City Administrator Gonzalo Malig-on said the overwhelming number of applicants reflects strong public interest, but also brings pressure as many qualified students may not be accommodated.

Malig-on described the situation as both encouraging and challenging, noting that the city is happy to see high engagement but sad that limited funding restricts the number of scholars.

“As I’ve said, happy kay makakita ta nga grabe ang engagement sa announcement sa city but ma-sad sad mi in a way nga daghan ang dili ma accommodate,” said Malig-on.

“Ana man g’yud na dili man unlimited ang resources sa government,” said Malig-on, noting that they will have to prioritize based on objective criteria.

Under the administration of Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano, the number of scholarship slots increased to 150 from the previous 100 --marking the highest allocation so far.

Despite the increase, Malig-on confirmed that not all applicants will secure a slot. He emphasized that candidates will go through a thorough screening process, including interviews and evaluation based on objective criteria, to determine who qualifies.

To ensure fairness, applicants will be assessed by two separate interview panels, and the selection process will follow strict guidelines.

Malig-on also assured the public that no preferential treatment, such as guarantee letters, will be entertained.

Each selected scholar will receive ?17,000 per semester and may enroll in any school in Cebu.

He  added that education remains a priority of the Ouano administration, with plans to further expand the scholarship program in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the College Scholarship Grant and Advisory Board, through the Mandaue City Youth Development Office, has released the list of applicants who will advance to the panel interview stage.
