12 injured in TPUJ crash
CEBU, Philippines — At least 12 passengers were injured after two traditional public utility jeepneys (TPUJs) collided at the intersection of D. Jakosalem and V. Gullas Streets in Cebu City on Friday morning, May 1.
The involved vehicles were a 04L TPUJ, with four passengers, driven by 45-year-old Eliseo Pacaña Baculi, a resident of sitio Cambitas, Barangay Babag 2, Cebu City and a 62B TPUJ, loaded with 14 passengers, driven by 56-year-old Florencio Aser Gabonada, a resident of sitio Camansilis, Barangay Pung-ol Sibugay, Cebu City.
Of the 18 passengers, at least 12 reportedly sustained injuries and were brought separately to Cebu City Medical Center and at a private hospital in the city.
As of this writing, the identities of the injured individuals were not yet disclosed by the authorities.
Based on the initial investigation of the Cebu City Police Office - Traffic Enforcement Unit (CCPO-TEU) and the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage in the area, the collision occurred at around 9:26 a.m.
It was reported that the 04L jeep was traversing along D. Jakosalem Street heading toward the University of Visayas direction, while the 62B jeep was traveling along V. Gullas Street heading toward Colonade direction.
However, the 04L jeep reportedly proceeded to move forward despite the traffic signal being red, while the 62B jeep crossed the intersection during the yellow light signal.
Upon reaching the intersection, the 62B jeep struck the middle right portion of the 04L, causing the latter to overturn onto its left side.
Due to the collision, the passengers of both vehicles sustained undetermined injuries, while the two drivers were unhurt.
Some of the passengers in the 62B jeep claimed that the driver suddenly sped up and tried to beat the red light at the intersection.
The TEU said that both drivers are at fault and liable for the incident for not observing prudence and care while driving, adding that the 62B supposedly has the last clear chance to prevent the collision.
Currently, both drivers are detained at the custodial facility of the TEU, pending the ongoing investigation to determine the extent of their liabilities.
Both of them will face charges for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries and damage to properties. (FREEMAN)
