Caution advised: Air shifts between “fair” and “unhealthy”
CEBU, Philippines — The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB)-7 continues to advise the limitation of outdoor activities as air quality across Metro Cebu has fluctuated between “Fair” and “Unhealthy to Sensitive Groups” over the past five days.
As of yesterday, April 25, 2026, reports indicate that recent data showed a renewed increase in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations.
On the same day, monitoring stations of the agency also reported that the Talisay City Station reached an Air Quality Index (AQI) classification of “Unhealthy to Sensitive Groups,” raising concern among health and environmental authorities.
The EMB-7 attributed the spike in pollution levels to prevailing weather conditions, including high temperatures, lack of rainfall, and the accumulation of localized emissions.
These factors, EMB-7 said, contribute to the suspension of fine particulate matter in the atmosphere, preventing pollutants from dispersing efficiently.
EMB-7 warned that prolonged exposure to elevated PM2.5 levels may pose health risks, particularly to vulnerable sectors.
Sensitive groups, including children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing heart or lung conditions, are still advised to limit outdoor physical activities to reduce the likelihood of respiratory irritation and related complications.
The EMB-7 also recommended that those who must go outdoors, especially individuals within high-risk categories, use protective gear such as properly fitted N95 or KN95 masks to help filter out harmful airborne particles.
Meanwhile, the general public may continue normal activities but is encouraged to remain cautious.
Health officials advise that individuals experiencing symptoms such as throat irritation or coughing should consider staying indoors to avoid further exposure.
The EMB-7 also called on residents to take part in reducing air pollution by avoiding backyard burning and adopting more efficient travel practices to minimize emissions.
The agency assured the public that it will continue to closely monitor air quality conditions and release timely advisories as Metro Cebu works toward achieving safer and more stable air conditions. — (FREEMAN)
