Danao strengthens measures vs. El Niño
CEBU, Philippines — Danao City has strengthened its preparedness measures against the possible impacts of El Niño following a coordination meeting led by Mayor Nito Durano, together with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and all LGU departments.
He said the meeting focused on reinforcing mitigation and preparedness strategies, particularly for sectors most vulnerable to extreme heat such as agriculture, water supply, and public health.
Based on the advisory of PAGASA, the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently being closely monitored. Following the end of La Niña in March 2026, conditions are now classified as ENSO-neutral.
However, there is an increasing likelihood of El Niño developing between July and September 2026.
This condition may bring higher temperatures and reduced rainfall, potentially causing dry spells and drought in some areas. Despite this, the Habagat season may still bring heavy rains, particularly in the western parts of the country.
The LGU emphasized the importance of early preparation, noting that the city has already experienced challenges in water supply, agriculture, and public health in the previous year.
Durano warned that without adequate preparation, the effects of extreme heat could become more widespread and significantly impact the community. He also stressed that current climate conditions, driven by climate change, require stronger and more proactive responses.
Danao City residents are urged to cooperate, conserve water, plan their resources wisely, and prepare for the possible impacts of El Niño. (CEBU NEWS)
