Air pollution levels spike anew
CEBU, Philippines — The Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas (EMB-7) reported a renewed spike in air pollution levels in Talisay City on Thursday, April 23, 2026, following a brief period of improving conditions.
Based on monitoring conducted yesterday morning, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations increased anew due to stagnant air and local emissions, causing pollutants to accumulate in the area.
As a result, EMB-7 said the air quality classification at the Talisay City monitoring station worsened from “Fair” on April 22 to “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.”
The agency emphasized that PM2.5 particles pose serious health risks because they can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream.
EMB-7 strongly advised individuals belonging to sensitive sectors, including those with respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, children, and senior citizens, to limit prolonged or heavy outdoor activities.
The use of properly fitted N95 or KN95 masks is also highly recommended when going outside.
For the general public, EMB-7 noted that while health risks remain lower, mild symptoms such as throat irritation and coughing may still occur.
Residents were urged to minimize strenuous outdoor activities, including jogging and heavy labor, until air quality conditions improve. EMB-7 assured the public that it continues to closely monitor PM2.5 concentrations in real time and remains on heightened alert.- FPL (CEBU NEWS)
