UC’s Go backs Taiwan internship program to boost global readiness of Cebu students
CEBU, Philippines — University of Cebu Chairman Augusto Go has expressed support for an international internship program designed to prepare students for global employment, highlighting a partnership with DreamWork that deploys trainees to Taiwan’s hospitality industry.
Launched in 2022 by Filipino-Taiwanese partners, the initiative connects universities with hotel placements abroad, bridging academic learning with real-world experience.
To date, more than 270 students have been sent to Taiwan, with over 180 currently in training and hundreds more awaiting deployment.
Go said the program builds on earlier overseas training efforts in Singapore, Bulgaria, and the United States, but noted Taiwan offers a more practical option due to its proximity to Cebu.
Shorter travel time, he added, allows families to remain connected while students gain international exposure.
Organizers stressed that student welfare is a priority, with partner hotels required to provide allowances, accommodation, and support services.
Interns receive monthly stipends and industry experience aligned with their field of study, boosting their chances of employment with host companies after completion.
“This is about converting academic training into competitive readiness,” Go said, emphasizing the program’s goal of equipping students with skills for the global workforce.
He added that demand for international internships continues to grow, with long-term plans to expand participation to thousands of students in collaboration with local universities. — Jose Luis Flores, CTU Tuburan Intern (FREEMAN)
