MGB-7 warns of landslide risk at Valencia Elementary School
CEBU, Philippines — The municipal government of Alegria, Cebu will coordinate with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Central Visayas (MGB-7) to implement structural and safety interventions at Valencia Elementary School after ground cracks were discovered in the area.
On March 16, 2026, the 17th Sangguniang Bayan passed a resolution authorizing immediate coordination with the two agencies in response to the geohazard alert issued by MGB-7.
The legislative move came after MGB-7 conducted a Geohazard Identification Survey (GIS) on February 25, 2026, at the school located in Purok 2, Matinabangon, Barangay Valencia.
The inspection was initiated following a report from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) about noticeable ground cracks in the area.
Findings from the assessment revealed that portions of the school grounds are classified as having “high landslide susceptibility,” with signs of ground subsidence that could worsen during heavy rains or seismic activity.
“Our assessment has shown that the school is at significant risk. Protecting the students and staff must be our top priority, and we are working closely with local officials to ensure the necessary safety measures are put in place immediately,” said MGB-7 OIC Director Al Emil G. Berador in a statement.
The geohazard survey was conducted in collaboration with school officials led by Principal Ronald L. Pileo, along with local disaster responders. The municipal government also formally adopted the PTA’s appeal for intervention under Resolution No. 2026-01, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Councilor Lenie L. Piñez sponsored the resolution, which was attested by Vice Mayor Verna V. Magallon. The measure was prompted by urgent concerns raised by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) regarding visible ground instability.
The resolution emphasized the importance of science-based decision-making in addressing potential hazards.
“These scientific findings are essential in assessing potential risks,” the resolution stated, adding, “Our priority is to protect the welfare of our students, teachers, and staff through responsible, coordinated action.” MRM CEBU NEWS
