Council green lights rollout of P5,000 aid to brgy-based workers

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — One-time cash assistance of P5,000 each now awaits barangay-based workers as Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival was given a go signal for its release, totaling P35 million, a move that stresses the city’s recognition of grassroots service providers who remain at the frontline of governance.

The approval came after the City Council, through a resolution authored by ex-officio Councilor Franklyn Ong, formally endorsed the disbursement in line with City Ordinance No. 2799.

The ordinance, passed in December 2025, prescribes the grant of one-time aid to barangay workers for calendar year 2025.

The measure was described as urgent, citing the need to provide relief amid rising costs of living and the continuing demands of community service.

Under the program, each barangay worker is expected to receive P5,000.

With the ?35 million allocation, the city expects to cover around 7,000 workers, including barangay health workers, tanods, daycare teachers, nutrition scholars, and other personnel who form the backbone of local service delivery.

Supporting documents, including the Certificate of Appropriation Available and the Certificate of Availability of Funds, confirmed that the amount is chargeable to the Office of the Mayor’s account for one-time cash assistance.

Ong, who also serves as Liga ng mga Barangay president, emphasized that the grant is a “well-deserved recognition” of barangay workers’ pivotal role in implementing programs and responding to crises.

He noted that these workers have been indispensable in disaster response, public health campaigns, and community welfare initiatives, often serving as the first point of contact between government and residents.

The resolution directs the Sangguniang Panlungsod secretary to expedite copies to the Mayor, Budget Officer, Accountant, Treasurer, and the Liga ng mga Barangay for implementation. With this, the city government aims to ensure swift distribution of the aid to all eligible workers.

However, no exact date for the release has been disclosed as of press time.  IHM (CEBU NEWS)
