Mandaue CDRRMO moved to old North Bus Terminal

Kristin De Dios - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) will be transferred to the old Cebu North Bus Terminal in Barangay Subangdaku as construction of the new Mandaue City College (MCC) building is set to begin in the second quarter of the year.

City Administrator Atty. Sally Malig-on said the old terminal must be vacated as soon as possible, as it will serve as the new office of the CDRRMO.

Recently, the city government facilitated the relocation of at least 40 families who had been temporarily staying at the old terminal to Balay Paglaum in Barangay Guizo.

The beneficiaries include 31 families who lost their homes in a fire in Sitio Paradise, Barangay Looc, in 2022, and nine families whose houses were demolished in Barangay Subangdaku in the same year. The families had stayed for years at the former Cebu North Bus Terminal following the incidents.

Malig-on said the relocation was necessary not only because the terminal will now house the CDRRMO, but also due to safety concerns in the area, citing the presence of medical waste.

“It is about time nga mubalhin na sila,” Malig-on said.

At present, the CDRRMO is located at Norkis Park in Barangay Looc.

However, the area has been designated as the construction site for the new Mandaue City College building.

The MCC is among the priority projects of Mayor Thadeo Jovito Ouano and his administration.

Malig-on said the transfer of the CDRRMO to the old North Bus Terminal was decided upon because there is already an existing structure that only needs renovation.

The MCC building will be an eight-storey structure. Funding for the project has been included in the 2026 General Appropriations Act (GAA), with more than ?450 million allocated for its initial construction.

Ouano earlier said the total cost of the MCC is estimated at around ?700 million, and the city government plans to seek additional funding next year to complete the entire structure. — (FREEMAN)
