CEBU, Philippines — The Cambogaong Bridge in Barangay Paknaan in Mandaue City is set to reopen today, February 22, following the completion of its rehabilitation - a vital link that provides access to Northern Cebu.

Thadeo Jovito Jonkie Ouano told reporters that the contractor and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have informed his office that the bridge is now ready for use.

In an interview, Ouano said that since the rehabilitation began last year, he has heard the sentiments of constituents, particularly those traveling from Consolacion town to as far north as Daanbantayan town, who experienced worsening traffic along major thoroughfares due to the bridge’s closure.

With the reopening, Ouano said this would be a big help in easing traffic, especially along the main highway.

“At least makaluag-luag na sa main thoroughfare nato. Diha na makaagi na pagbalik sa Cambogaong Bridge, mag-normalize na ta,” Ouano said.

The mayor added that he has been receiving feedback not only from Mandaue City residents but also from motorists who regularly pass through the area.

He explained that the city did not pressure the contractor to rush the project, as the work was deliberately not hurried to ensure the strength and quality of the rehabilitated bridge.

“Ganahan ta makasiguro sa safety sa mga muagi dinha. Kung premature pa, simbako lang naay mahitabo dinha, mao na ang atong gilikayan,” Ouano said.

The city said the reopening of the bridge will be welcomed by motorists traveling to and from Northern Cebu, as it will be open to all types of vehicles.

Officials assured that motorists will no longer experience delays in traveling to work and other destinations, as they can now avoid the severe traffic congestion previously experienced in the area.

The bridge was closed in August 2025 after it was connected to the existing road structure and strengthened by the DPWH to accommodate various types of vehicles. The project forms part of a national government infrastructure program.

Located in Barangay Paknaan, the Cambogaong Bridge serves as a major route for large vehicles traveling to and from northern Cebu, particularly those passing through the Cansaga Bridge via Consolacion town.

Numerous complaints were previously raised due to daily heavy traffic congestion following the bridge’s closure.

Ouano expressed hope that the reopening of the Cambogaong Bridge would help ease traffic flow, especially in the Paknaan area. — (FREEMAN)
