Mandaue traffic to conduct study for reconfiguration
CEBU, Philippines — The Mandaue Traffic Enforcement Agency (T.E.A.M.) proposes to conduct traffic study within three months as basis for reconfiguring traffic light timers across the city.
This, as the agency aims to address the long-standing concern of traffic congestion and the growing volume of vehicles operating within the city.
T.E.A.M. head Hyll Retuya said that while timer adjustments are part of regular traffic management measures, it cannot be performed without proper data analysis.
He also noted that the most recent adjustments were made last year, which prompted the need for a new study.
“Kung asa tong mogawas sa study nga pinaka volume gyud ug vehicles, mao toy atong tagaan ug taas-taas nga lugway sa traffic light,” said Retuya.
The measure also came after the agency paid a visit to Consolacion Mayor Teresa “Nene” Alegado together with Mandaue Mayor Thadeo “Jonkie” Ouano Jr. to discuss traffic concerns, particularly in the Canduman area near Consolacion.
Retuya explained that data on vehicle volumes at traffic light locations during peak and non-peak hours will help ensure timing sequence corresponds to actual traffic demand.
“Dili absolute ang adjustment. Posible ma-addan ang atoang present timer karon, posible pud ma-shorten. It will all depend sa volume sa vehicle nga mopass through the intersection,” Retuya said.
He added that traffic lights are already programmed by time of day, weekends, and holidays to reflect varying traffic conditions.
The study will be conducted by the agency’s Traffic and Transportation Planning and Engineering Division (TTPED) with technical support from Triune Electronics System Inc. for reprogramming efforts. — Lynda Katherine B. Mecaros, UP Cebu Intern (FREEMAN)
