CEBU, Philippines — In celebration of Valentine's Day today, police forces are now on full alert status, warning the public to be vigilant against reports of minors being exploited and being allowed entry into accommodation establishments in Cebu.

Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) Director Police Colonel Abubakar Mangelen Jr. announced to the public that the police force is on full alert status to address any complaints involving juvenile individuals being exploited inside hotels, motels, lodging houses, and resorts.

This came after learning that reports regarding the issue have been prevalent, particularly during Valentine's Day.

Mangelen also mentioned that the public is expected to abide by existing laws and ordinances that protect the welfare of the public, particularly minors, regardless of their gender.

“We have existing ordinances and especially laws that protect our children,” he said. “May it be a female or male individual, for as long as it is considered a child, they are not supposed to be brought in these areas.”

Meanwhile, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) also echoed the same warning to the public, highlighting the importance of a safe and secure observance of the celebration.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Jose Los Baños, information officer of the CCPO, reminded those who want to celebrate Valentine’s Day to do so in areas that are visible and safe from possible risks and dangers, instead of staying in dark places.

“Sa mag-date nga mga mga mag-pamilya ug manag-uyab, make sure nga didto ta sa well-lighted area nga matao nga lugar, dile kay kamo ra duha,” said Los Baños.

He also encouraged them to inform their friends and family members of their whereabouts and the people they are with.

Los Baños also reminded the public to always secure their personal belongings, including phones, wallets, and bags, and to avoid bringing large amounts of cash.

To prevent falling victim to love scams, he urged the public to stay vigilant when physically meeting with persons they met only through the internet, underscoring the rampant modus operandi of identity fraud.

“Katung mga dunay mga nakaila through social media lang or text message lang nga mag meet-up mo, kung pwede careful ta ana kay wa ta kabalo na modus na,” he said.  (CEBU NEWS)
